Dog Food

Dog Food

Dog food refers to food specifically intended for consumption by dogs. Technically carnivorous, dogs have sharp, pointy teeth, and have short gastrointestinal tracts better suited for the consumption of meat. In spite of this natural carnivorous design, dogs have still managed to evolve over thousands of years to survive on the meat and non-meat scraps and leftovers of human existence and thrive on a variety of foods.

In the United States alone, dog owners spent over $8.5 billion on commercially manufactured dog food in 2007. Some people make their own dog food, feed their dogs meals made from ingredients purchased in grocery or health-food stores or give their dogs a raw food diet.

Royal Canin

Royal Canin

It was founded in 1967 in a village of Gard, France, by the French veterinary surgeon, Jean Cathary. Its headquarters are now located in Aimargues, France. In March 1972, Royal Canin was acquired by Guyomarc'h. In 1990, French bank, Paribas, bought out the Guyomarc'h Group.

In July 2001, Paribas sold Royal Canin to Mars for more than 1.5 billion euros. Approximately 93% of the purchase price consisted of goodwill paid. Mars paid 22.3 times its EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, and depreciation). In March 2004, Royal Canin acquired the veterinary grade manufacturers/service providers, in the U.S. and Canada, the IVD, Medi-Cal and Techni-Cal brands from Del Monte Foods for $82.5 million.

In each country veterinary delegate teams, which sometimes number over 70 people, are specifically dedicated to professionals. In Europe, Royal Canin sponsors or is active in 3,500 dog shows and 400 cat shows each year. In France, for instance, 35 cynotechnicians work with 4,000 dog breeders and 400 clubs. A "Feline Club" is open to more than 2,000 breeders.

Taste of the Wild

Taste of the Wild

Diamond Pet Foods, manufacturer of Taste of the Wild Pet Food, has issued a voluntary recall of limited batches of their dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011, and April 7, 2012 due to Salmonella concerns. Diamond Pet Foods apologizes for any potential issues this may have caused pet owners and their pets.

Although none of the products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. Diamond Pet Foods is coordinating efforts with federal and state health and regulatory agencies but decided to independently expand the recall to ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets.

To determine if your pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production codes on the back of bags. Any production codes that have a number “2” or a “3” in the 9th or 10th digit and an “X” in the 11th digit in the production code should be discarded. The best before dates are December 9, 2012, through April 7, 2013. The recall affects only products distributed in the following U.S. states and Canada. Further distribution to other pet food channels may have occurred.
