Rimadyl
Rimadyl (Carprofen) was introduced by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in January
1997. It has proven to be a successful means of relieving arthritis symptoms in
dogs. There is no doubt as to Riimadyl's effectiveness in treating dog
arthritis, but it is the potential side effects that may seriously outweigh the
benefits of this drug. Many dog owners feel it has vastly improved the quality
of their dog's lives and, in some cases, even extended their lives.
Many dogs have died
due to the unexpectedly rapid onset of side effects such as liver failure
and/or because the drug's side effects were not recognized by the attending
veterinarian who did not take appropriate action. Pfizer has begun sending
literature to veterinarians recommending test and pre screen the dogs before
prescribing. Rimadil for dog arthritis and joint
problems. Blood work must be periodically performed to ensure that the liver
and other organs are functionally normally.
Rimadyl is not recommended for animals with known bleeding disorders and should
not be used if a dog has preexisting liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease,
or a known tendency towards gastrointestinal ulceration. In fact, these are
some of the side effects reported in a small number of cases involving the use
of Rimadyl. Rimadyl should never be given along with any other
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin, or along with any
corticosteroid hormones such as prednisone, prednisolone, or dexamethasone.

My dog was just put down due to carprofen vet never worrened againt side effects
ReplyDeleteThis was my wifes baby and mine and our female is besides herself .our dog had joint probplems. Was on deramax ut was christmas vet was closed we trusted in the emergancy vet thats when they gave us carprofen we has to put him to sleep new years day he was bleeding in to his spleen . Phizer is at fault as well to promote such a drug. All i can say because there are no words for our lose in our family my dog ghost was my best friend. I cry everynight and my heart heart has such a hug whole
ReplyDeleteMy beloved dog died last night, after a happy and uneventful day. She was being treated for a skin infection, for inflammation she was prescribed Rimdayl and a standard antibiotic, with no warnings, no consultation, Rimdayl twice a day for 14 days. We recognized that she was off a bit after the 1st day after taking the meds, so we called the vet, they were unconcerned, told us to keep giving it to her, no warnings, no concern at all. She took the antibiotic in the moring and was fine, its was only after taking the Rimdayl that she began to act confused distraught and unnerved, but the vet thought nothing of this. The wound was healing, she was eating and acting like herself again. We gave her the Rimdayl at 7pm in the evening Friday, by 11:30 she had started acting strange, she dropped, and convulsed... we called emergency care since this was a weekend, when we mentioned Rimdayl, they said keep her comfortable, film her spasms, film her gums to see that they were not White, and look for any signs of blood at the Anus and film it, save these films, it was late, my belief is that they did not think she would live to make it 40 miles to the center and that it may already have been too late for my girl. They told us to keep her comfortable stay with her and leave messages for the vet... we did, she died horribly, seizures all evening for 2 hours, then she passed, she was only 8 years old, a beautiful Golden Retriever, mother of 9, two of which still live with us, so we have this to be thankful for. Always fed the best foods, pure bred with a lineage going back to the late 1800's from a very reputable private breeder.
ReplyDeleteThe antibiotics she tolerated fine once a day, but the Rimdayl twice a day killed my dog. This drug should be taken off the market, I will now make it my life's work to be sure that all pet owners know what happened, and that the incompetent Vet is put out of business.... I have a voice, and I'll be god dammed if I don't use it.
